LIFE IS LIKE A TOILET ROLL… The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.

I just attended an inspiring and down-to-earth talk on retirement planning—focused less on numbers and more on what truly matters.

The talk opened with two thought-provoking questions: How much time do you spend planning your next holiday? Now, compare that to how much time you spend planning your retirement—not the savings, but the life you want to build. What will you fill your retirement portfolio with?

This stage of life is full of possibilities, but it’s important to take your time. Retirement is a long journey, and thoughtful, deliberate planning will help you make the most of it.

There are the “on-paper” must-do’s. These need attention as they set the foundation, but they’re just one part of the bigger picture.

• Budget
• Will, including a living will

The essential must-dos follow this; they are the non-negotiables that lay the groundwork for a secure and fulfilling future

• Do something that gives you pleasure; if you are happy, you will be nicer to be around
• Keep physically fit; you want to be fit enough to do all the things you want to do
• Stamina: keep the steps up
• Prioritize your physical health: keep building muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination—they’re essential for staying active and independent. 
• Use as much energy as you do at work! 
• Avoid constant snacking—your diet plays a crucial role, especially now that you have more time to focus on your health and well-being

Friends

• Avoid relying on work relationships, as you might discover that once work ends, the friendships diminish.
• Make new friends along this journey
• Be a “yes” person—first say yes to an invitation—then check your diary
• Make friends who don’t look like you
• Stay mentally alert—study, research, read

Other important questions

• Can you assist others along the way?
• When was the last time you tried something new? Keep asking yourself this question and continue exploring new experiences, as they help you stay engaged and sharp.

Most importantly, don’t leave this planning too late—you don’t want to find yourself at the end of the last toilet roll.
